Two things worth knowing early. First: family occasions — Christmas at your parents', a non-Muslim relative's funeral — are genuinely disputed among scholars, and within the same madhhab. Anyone who tells you there is one obvious answer is flattening a real disagreement. Ask a teacher who knows your situation, and see the Answer Desk for where to ask. Second: you will meet the claim that "70% of converts leave Islam". It traces to one chaplain's anecdotal estimate, not to research — Pew's actual finding is that in the US, Islam gains about as many converts as it loses. Do not let a made-up number tell you the odds are against you.
