Praying when ill or disabled — worship when your body won’t cooperate

Praying from a hospital bed or a chair, fasting with diabetes or kidney disease, the Quran in Braille and in sign language, and what is actually in your medication. Medical links go to clinicians; fiqh links name the school they answer from.

Fasting with an illness is a medical question and a fiqh question at the same time, and neither half answers the other. A fatwa written for somebody else’s condition is not a diagnosis, and a clinician’s risk category is not a ruling. Take both to people who know your case. Where a fast is genuinely not possible, the schools differ on what is owed instead — qada, fidya, or both — so ask about that specifically rather than assuming.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine over an ingredient without speaking to your prescriber. Scholars differ on medicines containing derivatives where no alternative exists, and the safer route is to ask the pharmacist for a substitute and the scholar about the original — in that order.
