Prayer space at work — asking for somewhere to pray

What the law actually entitles you to when you ask an employer or a university for prayer space, a break at Maghrib, or a day off for Eid — plus the professional ethics bodies. Labelled by country, because the answer genuinely differs. Not legal advice.

Country and date both matter here. These are statements of employment law, not fiqh, and they do not transfer across borders. The American standard in particular moved in 2023, when the Supreme Court raised what an employer must show to refuse a religious accommodation — guidance written before that is out of date. Check the date on anything you rely on, and take a specific dispute to someone qualified in your own jurisdiction.

What this room deliberately does not answer: “is my job haram?” Serving alcohol, working in conventional finance, and the many indirect roles around both are genuinely disputed — some bodies rule the income unlawful outright, others permit indirect roles for someone who cannot find alternative work, and the schools weigh alcohol and pork differently. Handing five contradictory fatwas to someone deciding whether to resign makes their situation worse, not better. Scholars differ; take it to one who knows your circumstances, and see The Answer Desk for where to ask.
